🎙️ Ladies, Gentlemen, and Avian Enthusiasts! 🎙️
Prepare yourselves for a chirpy tête-à-tête that’s bound to ruffle some feathers—in the best way possible, of course! Today, we’re nestling down with the one and only Wordy Bird Ltd, a company that’s been soaring to new heights in the content creation stratosphere. 🐦✨
Why Wordy Bird, you ask? Well, it’s not just because they’re the “tweet-hearts” of the copywriting world. No, no! They’ve got the plumage to prove their prowess, and they’re not just winging it! From web content that sings to eBooks that make your intellectual feathers fluff, they’ve got it all.
Right, that’s enough of the Pun’s and Dad humour; let’s get started and learn a little more about Wordy Bird.
About the Business:
BB – Welcome to Burntwood Business. We have so much to cover; where do we start?
You offer a veritable buffet of content creation services, from web content to eBooks. What’s the alchemy behind Wordy Bird Ltd’s ability to customise these services for each unique client?
And for those who are curious, where can they get a tantalising preview of your portfolio?
WB – As a generalist mid-weight copywriter, I offer services to businesses, including web content (refresh work and content for new websites), blogs, newsletters, eBooks, brochures – you name it, and I’ll find the words for it. Every client is different in terms of their industry, whether they’re B2B or B2C, and what their aims are when they engage my services. Before putting pen to paper there’s the all-important ‘getting to know you’ one-to-one. This helps me to ascertain the clients’ tone of voice, their audience, their objectives, their values, their competitors, and their aspirations. After the initial meeting, there’s the research and planning stage. Yes, there’s much more to copywriting than just writing!
About the Awards:
BB – Also a standing ovation is in order! Winning the Cannock Chase Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year 2023 is monumental. How does it feel to be the dark horse that galloped to victory?
And has this award been a morale-boosting elixir for your team?
WB – Thank you! Winning the award was a complete shock. I was the only micro-business in the running, up against much larger companies than Wordy Bird Ltd. I didn’t think I stood a chance, to be honest. I don’t really remember collecting the award at the Gala Night back in February – I was in a daze. Luckily, a friend took a video of the moment so I have relived it many times over! It’s always good to have an accolade such as Cannock Chase Business of the Year and it’s really put a spring in my step this year.
About You:
BB – Congratulations on the award.
Your metamorphosis from a social media maven to a copywriting virtuoso is compelling. What was the catalyst that ignited this transformation?
And can you share a project that was a true tour de force for you?
WB – When I first became self-employed in 2012 my main focus was on social media management and training (I still have a handful of social media clients today). Over the years, the social media landscape has changed considerably. During the early days of the pandemic, I decided I wanted to re-focus and concentrate on copywriting. I’d done a few blogs for clients and longer form LinkedIn articles, but never had the confidence to call myself a copywriter. Despite keeping all my clients’ social feeds going during lockdown (yes, even the ones whose businesses had to close) I invested in my own training and took a Diploma in copywriting, which I passed with a Distinction. I’d also joined the networking organisation BNI in August 2020 which had an immediate (positive) effect on my income. My accountant suggested I should register myself as a Limited Company, so it seemed the perfect opportunity to re-brand and create Wordy Bird Limited. In April 2022 Wordy Bird Limited was born.
I’ve always loved writing, so to turn my passion into a business I love is really living the dream!
I think one of the most challenging projects I’ve worked on was an eBook for an accountant. It started life as seven bullet points in an email, which I turned into a full 32-page eBook, including all the page setting and stylisation. The client was over the moon, as was I!
BB – Wow, that is one hell of a project scope creep. I can imagine that ebook did wonders for your client, too.
Self-Promotion:
BB – Now, in a sea of content creators, what’s the unique selling proposition that makes Wordy Bird Ltd the pearl in the oyster, other than being Burntwood’s local wordsmith?
WB – What makes me different? I guess it’s the ‘what you see is what you get’ thing. I’m very honest with my clients, and if I don’t think there’s a good fit for us as copywriter and client, I’ll say so. I’m very lucky in so much as I have a few trusted copywriters in my network, so if I can’t do a job for whatever reason, I can pass it over to someone else whom I trust implicitly.
No two jobs are the same, but I am keen to grow my client base of wellbeing businesses. I also work really well with web designers and graphic designers as their clients seem to think that writing content is included within the technical remit.

About Listing with Burntwood Business:
BB – We’ve added you as a “trusted neighbour” on Burntwood Business. How does this listing serve as a local SEO catalyst for your brand and your clients?
WB – I’ve been a member of a local networking group, Burntwood in Business (no affiliation with Burntwood Business Listings), since 2016. Small businesses are the lifeblood of any community and I’m keen to support local businesses of all shapes and sizes when it comes to how they’re perceived on their website, newsletters, and social media platforms. It’s very easy to get it wrong, which can be damaging. But get it right, and you build trust, loyalty and a better calibre of client.
I’m hoping that Burntwood Business will help other businesses in the area know that they don’t have to do everything themselves, and that there’s a Wordy Bird just waiting to find the right words for their business!
BB – Well, that’s what we hope too; there are so many unique businesses out there, including yours. We certainly hope that being on Burntwood Business helps you and everyone else find their place and, hopefully new clients.
Writing Background:
BB – Your passion for writing is palpable. Are there any seminal experiences or qualifications that have been your North Star in shaping your content creation ethos?
WB – As I’ve previously said, I’ve always loved writing. From a very young age, writing school holiday diaries, short stories, and history essays …. I was in my glory. I think I was born with a pen in my hand and a worrying obsession with stationery. I’m a member of the ProCopywriters Alliance and the Chartered Institute of PR (CIPR), both of which offer amazing ongoing CPD training opportunities throughout the year. There’s always room to learn in a creative industry, and copywriting is no different.
Passion for Wordy Bird:
BB – The name “Wordy Bird” is catchy and evocative. Can you delve deeper into why helping businesses find the right words has become your magnum opus?
What are the moments that make you say, “This is why Wordy Bird Ltd exists”?
WB – Those who have met me will know that I’m not from this part of the world. I was born in London and grew up in Essex. Wordy Bird just seemed to fit when I was brainstorming a company name – bird being slang for woman/girl/lady. As for finding the right words for businesses, I can spot self-written content a mile off! As a copywriter, my job is to put myself in the shoes of my clients’ clients and write for them. I don’t believe in jargon, acronyms and corporate waffle. Just well-written copy that resonates with the audience it’s intended for. Self-written (internal) copy can easily read like a technical sales manual. My mantra is sell the good night’s sleep, not the mattress – basically benefits over facts.
Final Thoughts:
BB – In an era where AI and bots are ubiquitous, what’s your golden nugget of wisdom for businesses teetering on the edge of human vs machine-generated content?
And for those now chomping at the bit to collaborate with you, what’s the best conduit for connection?
WB – I’m always happy to meet up with local businesses if they’re struggling with words. New content on your website on a regular basis can help with your search engine optimisation (SEO), as well as providing content for social media platforms. Don’t rely on ChatGPT or any of the other AI bots out there. It won’t give your words any emotion, empathy, depth, or tone of voice. It will give you a collection of words – surely your business is worth more than that?
BB – We totally understand that, AI is not as good as people think and losing your voice in a myriad of AI-generated fluff doesn’t go down well with Google or other Search Engines either; we are so glad there is people like you out there helping people realise that the human holding the pen is mightier than the AI wielding a sword!
